A denture is a removable option for replacing missing teeth. It can be a partial denture meaning you have some natural teeth remaining or a complete denture meaning you have no teeth in that jaw.
When teeth are lost the jaw bone will shrink and sometimes the best cosmetic outcome is achieved with a denture as both the missing teeth and gums can be readily replaced.
In general there are two types of partial denture which can be full or partial:
- Acrylic dentures
- Cobalt chrome dentures
Acrylic dentures consist of the denture teeth attached to an acrylic base plate.
They are easier to add teeth to and the biting forces are borne more by the gum.
Cobalt Chrome dentures have a metal base plate or framework that sits on and around the natural teeth onto which denture teeth are attached by acrylic.
The biting forces are often borne by the remaining teeth.
